Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend October 16, 2005 OSU’s Anderson makes big splash in return home Beaver Notes By CLIFF KIRKPATRICK for the Mail Tribune BERKELEY, Calif. — Sir Henry Anderson enjoys playing the California football team. And it’s much more than being an Oakland native for the Oregon State defensive tackle. The senior knows several players who have stayed in the Bay Area to play for the Golden Bears in Berkeley. Beating them has been important for bragging rights. His passion doesn’t come from being a Cal fan growing up. When he was a teenager, the Bears weren’t as good of a team as they are now. He watched Southern California and UCLA games instead. "I wanted to beat them because of the guys I know on the team, and it being my last year," Anderson said. "They are a lot of trash talkers. I would see them in the offseason and we would get into it." Advertisement But it’s Anderson who has been able to do most of the talking. He’s 4-1 against Cal in his time with the Beavers, after Saturday’s 23-20 win in Memorial Stadium. Reserve wide receiver David Gray and quarterback Kyle Reed are old teammates from McClymonds High. They and running back Marshawn Lynch, who went to Oakland Tech, called Anderson last week to reminisce about their last meeting. SOPHOMORE YVENSON BERNARD rushed for 194 yards and two touchdowns Saturday. He pounded out 4.6 yards a carry and made up for a passing game that only produced 196 yards. OSU HAD THE BALL three times inside the Cal 20-yard line, but couldn’t punch it into the end zone, settling for field goals instead. Scoring in the red zone is one of the main areas the Beavers need to improve. THE INJURY BUG did bite the Beavers, although none were severe. Free safety Al Afalava (knee) left the game at the beginning of the second quarter. He was hurt diving at QB Joe Ayoob, who had scored on a halfback pass. LB Alan Darlin (ribs) was hit hard on OSU’s first kickoff return in the second quarter and didn’t return. THE TURNING POINT in Saturday’s game came when safety Sabby Piscitelli intercepted a pass with less than 9 minutes left in the game. That set up the game-winning touchdown with 6:41 left. CAL WAS HELD to just 101 yards rushing, despite averaging 271 yards per contest heading in. The Bears were fifth in the country and second in the Pacific-10 Conference in total rushing yards. INSTANT REPLAY HASN’T helped the Beavers much this season after two replays overturned calls that involved touchdowns. Officials on the field said Ayoob didn’t score in the second quarter, but the official in the booth gave Cal a TD. Then Mike Hass recovered a fumble by Bernard in the end zone, but the score was nullified because Hass’ foot was out of play. SOPHOMORE OUTSIDE LINEBACKER Andy Darkins made his first career start as expected because of his hard-hitting style against a running team. He made two tackles and had an interception. Sophomore Derrick Doggett, who started the first five games, also played significant minutes. CAL SENIOR JOHN RUST of Lake Oswego is the third-string tight end. He has caught five passes for 53 yards in his career, but hasn’t made one this season. The 6-foot-5, 240-pounder was originally a wide receiver, but switched positions in the spring of 2002. TIGHT END JOHN REESE verbally committed to the Beavers, according to Rivals.com. The Upland, Calif., player is the 12th commitment for the 2006 season — three of them are tight ends and seven are offensive or defensive linemen. Reese is a 6-foot-4, 220-pounder with 4.94-second speed in the 40-yard dash. He’s an athletic player, who can catch the ball and block.
