Orville Hector / for the Mail Tribune Fire destroys Ashland garage By JENNIFER SQUIRES for The Mail Tribune ASHLAND — Fire raced through a rural Ashland garage Friday night, setting off explosions that shot flames 20 feet into the air, witnesses and authorities said. The 7:30 p.m. blaze at 3324 Highway 66 was visible for miles, and two local fire chiefs who live in the area saw flames shooting from the garage and called in the fire. It was difficult, however, for either caller to determine how fire crews could reach the house, officials said. Resident Mark Griffiths said he uses the garage for a woodworking shop and storage at the house he rents on Highway 66 just south of Ashland. The garage, about 30 feet from the home, was completely destroyed in the blaze. Although the house has a Highway 66 address, it is located less than a mile up Maywood Way, a one-lane rural road that splits off the highway around milepost 3 and forks twice in the first 300 yards. Advertisement "Our first units had a difficult time locating it, even though it was fully involved," Jackson County Fire District 5 Chief Dan Marshall said. When firefighters did arrive, saving the building was a lost cause, he said. Cans of diesel in one corner exploded, feeding flames that shot 20 feet in the air, according to Matt Adolphson, a friend who was with Griffiths when the fire was discovered. No one was inside the garage when the fire erupted. Fire officials are investigating the cause of the blaze. Crews from Fire District 5 and Ashland Fire & Rescue responded. Seven firefighters, two water-tender trucks and an engine worked to control the blaze and protect nearby buildings. Extinguishing the blaze took more than an hour, and crews remained on scene to watch for flare-ups for several hours. "It’s going to be a long night," Marshall said.
