For some time this has been a foregone conclusion. From the actions of the promoters, it is clear that it was the intention from the start. It had been privately promised Grants Pass from the beginning of the campaign. No one in this section of the valley has any objection to the location of the factory where the promoters see fit to place it. The objection is wholly due to the unfair deception practiced by the promoters to secure the cooperation of Medford citizens and the promises made prospective beet growers in this section to secure contracts for acreage. When the promoters publicly and repeatedly gave their word that the factory would be located in this region signing up the greatest acreage of beets and that the location would be decided by C. W. Nibley after a visit of inspection, they stated what developments have shown—they had no intention of living up to—just a hot-air promise. The greatest acreage was signed up in this end of the valley, contingent upon the factory being placed here—but the offer was spurned. Mr. Nibley never visited the locality to select a site. It was chosen to enhance land interests of the promoters—which would meet with no objection, provided there had been no willful deception. There is no reason why those who want to raise beets should not do it—but if their company does not meet the cooperation expected, they only have themselves to blame. ASHLAND AND VICINITY The no-license ordinance, as far as theatres and billiard halls are concerned, has been passed over the mayor's veto by a strict party vote of 4 to 2. The city attorney's salary is fixed at $50 per month, although another lawyer put in a bid for the job at $20. In the meantime the electric light committee of the council is struggling with the problem of synchronizing the currents of the city plant and leased system. Some think they may have to return the buck which was passed to them by the outside corporation.
