At about 5 p.m. Tuesday, Jackson County sheriff's deputies received a report that a plaque was missing from the 11000 block of Table Rock Road, according to spokeswoman Andrea Carlson. Sheriff's Deputy Eric Johnson said the last time the plaque was reported to have been seen was in November.  “A concerned citizen who drove by it daily saw that it was missing,” Johnson said. It appeared to have been pried off its mount, he said. Cost to replace the plaque was estimated at several hundred dollars, but DAR values it beyond the price of its replacement. "It's just a shame — it's been there 70, 80 years," Crater Lake DAR chaplain Callie Marek said. "It's just disheartening." “It’s pretty sad that someone would even think of taking that,” Johnson said. The plaque was installed in 1928 to commemorate a treaty between the Rogue River American Indians and Gen. Joseph Lane that was signed near the site on Sept. 10, 1853. The treaty was also attended by a U.S. delegation of 10 men, including Col. John E. Ross and Sen. James Nesmith. On Sept. 25, 1928, the plaque was presented to an audience of about 200, including Arthur Lane and Mrs. Eugene Shelby, grandchildren of Gen. Lane. Sen. Samuel Garfield gave the chief address, according to Mail Tribune archives. The plaque is one of a handful the local chapter has placed at sites of historical significance throughout the county. "Part of DAR's mission is historic preservation," Marek said. "We have a total of seven (plaques) located throughout the county." Archives note that the actual location of the site where the treaty was signed is up for debate. By 1928 the location was controversial, and at the time of its placement, the monument's location was decided to be the most suitable one. Archives show that landowner and sportsman John Day directed a Mail Tribune reporter to a more likely location of the signing in 1981, approximately two miles south and west of the marker's location. In 2007, former U.S. Forest Service historian Jeff LaLande drew from the writings of Sen. Nesmith to point out a similar location close to the walls of Lower Table Rock. In the present, law enforcement and the DAR are hoping this piece of history isn't sold for scrap. "It is a concern, since it is a bronze statue, that it would be sold or melted down," Carlson said. "It's still an open case." Anyone with knowledge of the plaque's disappearance is encouraged to call the sheriff's office at 541-774-6800 and reference case number 15-2059.
