Appel says she plans to retire in '07 Sep 30, 2004 12:00 AM A A Libby Appel's new contract will be her last. — The Oregon Shakespeare Festival's Artistic Director signed — a new contract that extends to the end of the 2007, while announcing that — at its conclusion she will retire. — Executive Director Paul Nicholson also signed new contracts — for three years at the Board of Directors meeting on Friday, Sept. 17. — — Appel, 67, has been the artistic director since 1995, — when she succeeded Henry Woronicz. — "The board is delighted that this proven team of Libby — and Paul have committed to working with us for another three years," said — Chuck Butler, president of the OSF Board of Directors. "They give us strength — and continuity in these challenging times, and both will be deeply involved — in the search for Libby's successor. We are all hoping we find someone — with her talent, vision and commitment." — Appel said she is pleased with her accomplishments and — remains energized for the coming three seasons. — "I look forward to crafting three more seasons filled — with extraordinary artistic experiences in a company that is up to every — aspect of the task and for an audience that delights in our work," Appel — said. — Appel was named OSF artistic director in 1995, During — her tenure as artistic director she and Nicholson have continued the OSF — tradition of commitment to artistic excellence and fiscal health. — The search for a new artistic director will actively begin — in April 2006, so that the new artistic director may choose and present — the 2008 season by March of 2007. — In 13 seasons at OSF, Appel has directed a long list of — plays: Henry VI, Part One, Henry VI, Parts Two & Three, Richard II, Macbeth, — Saturday, Sunday, Monday, The Trip to Bountiful, Three Sisters, Henry — V, Hamlet, Henry IV, Part Two, Measure for Measure, Uncle Vanya, King — Lear, The Magic Fire (also at the Kennedy Center), The Merchant of Venice, — The Winter's Tale, Breaking the Silence, Enrico IV (The Emperor) (Ashland); — The Seagull (Portland). — Prior to coming to OSF, Appel was the artistic director — of the Indiana Repertory Theatre from 1992-1996. Other jobs include work — as the dean and artistic director of the School of Theatre at the California — Institute of the Arts and head of the acting program at California State — University, Long Beach. Appel is the author of "Mask Characterization: — An Acting Process." She is co-author with Michael Flachmann of two plays, — Shakespeare's Women and Shakespeare's Lovers.
