Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend June 25, 2005 Mount McLoughlin hiker’s body found MOUNT MCLOUGHLIN — The body of a Beaverton hiker who did not return home earlier this month as expected following a trip to Southern Oregon was located Friday, Jackson County Sheriff Mike Winters said. John Vincent Zazzara, 54, was reported missing by a friend on June 16. Zazzara reportedly left his Beaverton home and traveled alone to Mount McLoughlin on June 12, police said. Search teams from Jackson and Klamath counties last week located Zazzara’s Toyota sport-utility vehicle parked at a trailhead on the east side of the mountain. The official search for Zazzara was terminated Wednesday, after Klamath County Sheriff Tim Evinger announced that officials had exhausted all reasonable search options. Zazzara’s friends and a professional mountain climber continued the search, but it was unknown late Friday if the group was responsible for locating the Beaverton man, police said. Friends said Zazzara had been interested in trying some difficult climbs up a backward-sloping cliff off the summit trail. Winters said the Lane County Sheriff’s Mountain Rescue unit will go to Mount McLoughlin today to assist Klamath County searchers with recovery of Zazzara’s body. No further information was available late Friday.
