Bones' hat trick fuels Phoenix's 4-1 victory TALENT -- Jennifer Bones was a scoring machine as Phoenix defeated Glide 4-1 in the opening round of the Class 3A girls soccer playoffs Saturday at Hagler-James Park. The junior forward helped the Skyline Conference runner-up Pirates (9-3-3) dominate the playoff game against the Sky-Em League No. 3 team. Phoenix outshot Glide 36-3 and had a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks. Phoenix advances to a second-round match at noon Tuesday at Woodburn, the champion from the Capital League. "We controlled possession of the ball for the majority of the match," Phoenix coach Dan Sporrer said. "We attacked and spent most of the game on their side of the field." The Pirates took a 1-0 lead at the 14th minute on the first of three goals by Bones. The score came off a corner kick by Annie Kulig. Phoenix didn't score again until eight minutes into the second half, when Bones scored again off of Kulig's corner kick. "Jennifer is very aggressive on corner kicks," said Sporrer. "She's obviously one of the people we're trying to get the ball to." Glide answered back with a goal by Heather Woodson at the 65th minute to cut the Pirates margin in half. Bones completed her hat trick at the 78th minute off a pass from Lisa Perry. Then Perry got a goal of her own near the end of the game. "We regrouped after their goal and started putting on more pressure," said Sporrer. "Jennifer and Helen Shorland, our two forwards, played exceptionally well.
