Mail Tribune 100, Jan. 12, 1923 By Alissa Corman Jan 12, 2023 12:00 AM A A News from 100 years ago The following news items were drawn from the archives of the Mail Tribune 100 years ago Jan. 12, 1923 HEN ROOST THIEF GOES TO JAIL Dewey Miller was sentenced to 15 days in the county jail when he pleaded guilty this morning before Justice Glenn O. Taylor to a charge of chicken stealing preferred by J. H. Cook. The chickens, said to be fine thoroughbred poultry, belonged to Cook. The arrest was made yesterday afternoon by Patrolman Cave. Tex Miller was arrested last night by Patrolman Prescott on a charge of drunkenness and was released on $15 bail, which was forfeited when he did not appear before Justice Taylor at an appointed hour today. Ed Grigsby was charged in a complaint, filed by Dora Price, truant officer, of failing to send his son to school. He was admonished by Justice Taylor to take upon himself the responsibility of seeing that his son attended school and was told that unless the son’s attendance was satisfactory henceforth that he would be compelled to stand trial, jointly with his wife, for not sending the boy to school. Grigsby agreed to see to it that his son attended school regularly and stated that his recent absence had been due to an injury of the eye sustained in a game of basketball. BASKETBALL GAME SCHEDULE LOCAL SCHOOL HEAVY Seats for the alumni-high school basketball games tomorrow night at the Nat went on sale this forenoon at Crowson’s and from advance sales a large crowd is expected. The games start promptly at 7:30 tomorrow night. The alumni squad has been practicing every night this week and the cigarette program which has been recommended by Captain Coleman has had excellent effects, making the old-timers exceptionally agile and long winded to say nothing of the basket shooting ability which has been enhanced by Lady Nicotine. Last night the alumni squad met the high school five and although definite score was not kept the high schoolers seemed to have but a very slight edge in the practice game. The game last night was practically an even contest and the one tomorrow night promises to be an exceedingly interesting one. — Alissa Corman; [email protected]
