'Big Y' construction will divert traffic Highway 99 motorists headed south to downtown Medford will be diverted to a Central Avenue extension when construction begins this week on the "Big Y" at Crater Lake Highway and Highway 99. Starting at 7 p.m. Monday, the Oregon Department of Transportation will close the southbound lanes of Highway 99 at the Big Y to begin excavation work on the intersection. Once excavation and repaving are completed on the southbound Highway 99 lanes, crews will begin the same type of work on the northbound lanes. The entire project should take about two weeks, ODOT officials say. While crews are working on the southbound Highway 99 lanes, traffic will be redirected to a newly built extension of Central Avenue. The extension connects Highway 99 to Central Avenue at McAndrews Road. When construction begins on the northbound Highway 99 lanes, motorists will be urged to use detours identified by ODOT. To avoid the Big Y during construction, motorists are asked to use the Central Avenue extension to access McAndrews Road, which provides connections to Riverside Avenue and Biddle Road. ODOT officials remind motorists that the lane closures will be in effect only during the 12-hour construction period. The excavation and paving work, however, may make roads rough. Motorists are asked to watch for uneven pavement when traveling through the work area.
