COLLEGE GOLF Wu off to fast start in NCAA regional Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted May. 14, 2015 at 7:02 PM Posted May. 14, 2015 at 7:02 PM » Social News NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Former St. Mary’s golfer Dylan Wu, a freshman at Northwestern, is tied for second place after the first round of the NCAA New Haven Regional Thursday at The Course at Yale. Wu, who is one of five at-large individuals in the field, fired a 2-under-par 68. There are 14 teams, of which five advance to the NCAA championships, and five individuals in the field. The low individual not on an advancing team also advances. His 68 is his eighth round in the 60s this year and his 11th total at par or better. Only four players in the 75-man field cracked par. South Florida’s Rigel Fernandes leads with a 64. "This is a really good course," said Wu. "It's not super challenging, but you have to play it smart. You have to be patient." The freshman made six birdies and a double bogey at the 377-yard par-4 seventh hole. Wu went birdie-birdie at Nos. 2 and 3, draining a 20-foot putt at the second and stuffing a blind approach at the 411-yard par-4 third to inside of 2 feet. He added another birdie at the par-3 fifth hole before the double bogey at No. 7, which he immediately answered with a fourth front-side birdie at No. 8. Wu tapped in for par at No. 9 to complete an outward 2-under 32. He began his back nine with a birdie at No. 10, but gave shots away at two long par-3s. In a big finishing stretch featuring two par 5s and the longest par 4 on the course, Wu birdied No. 16 before carding pars on the final two holes.
