Fire destroys second floor of older home

The second story of an older Trail home under remodel was destroyed Monday morning in a fire that firefighters were able to contain to the top floor. No one was in the house on the 300 block of Elk Creek Road when a neighbor noticed flames shooting out of the second story about 11:15 a.m. and called 9-1-1, according to Jackson County Fire District No. 4. Firefighters were at the scene in 11 minutes to discover the upper story of the two-story home fully involved in flames, district Capt. Rick Mendenhall said. An engine and a water tender from nearby Jackson County Fire District No. 3 aided in knocking down the fire, and the Prospect Fire Department also sent a water dender Mendenhall said. The second story was destroyed, but firefighters were able to save the first floor, which suffered smoke and water damage, Mendenhall said. Firefighters also were able to contain the blaze to the structure and kept flames from entering nearby wildlands, Mendenhall said. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, Mendenhall said.
