Phoenix downs North Valley, 64-54 MERLIN Phoenix wasnt expected to be a playoff team in the Skyline Conference, according to a preseason poll of the boys basketball coaches. But the Pirates arent taking that to heart. Phoenix opened the conference campaign with a 64-54 win over North Valley Friday, running its overall mark to 7-4 in the process. "It was significant for us," Pirates coach Tom Murphy said of the road win. "They didnt pick us to finish in the playoff system anywhere, and were pretty dedicated to doing that. This was our first league game and you have to start somewhere and get some confidence somewhere. Hopefully, this will help." In the poll compiled by Prep Basketball Oregon, North Valley was picked third and Phoenix seventh. Phoenix led by one in the third but went on a 9-0 run over two minutes to get some breathing room and built the lead to as many as 14 points. In the fourth, the Pirates made 9 of 13 foul shots, including 4 of 5 by Travis Kane. Kevin Jeffers, who had 11 rebounds, and Travis Brink each scored 12 for the Pirates. Mike Duffel had 10 points and seven rebounds. Derek Wright tallied 16 points and Matt Pittman 12 for North Valley. PHOENIX (64) Brink 12, Jeffers 12, Rombach 6, L.
