Crater girls romp in tourney LAKE OSWEGO - Before tip-off of Wednesday night's first-round game at the adidas Laker Interstate Shootout, the Crater girls basketball team talked about making a statement. A 37-4 first-quarter against Centennial took care of that. And a 96-25 final added to the declaration, even though Comets head coach David Heard called off the full-court press after the first quarter and rested his starters for more than half the game. "I was pleased with the way we shot the ball," said Heard, whose squad is No. 2-ranked in Class 4A and now 9-0. "We set a tournament record for points, but not on purpose." Crater drained a season-high 11 3-pointers, including four from senior point guard Sarah Pool. The Comets were 11-of-17 from behind the arc overall. Senior post Amy Denson tallied a game-high 25 points and snatched eight rebounds despite limited minutes. Pool finished with 15 points, seven assists and four steals and also spent most of the second half on the bench. The overmatched Eagles (1-6) committed 36 turnovers, and 13 of Crater's 14 players scored. No. 7-ranked Central Catholic should provide the Comets a challenge in second-round action at 7:30 tonight at Lake Oswego High. The game will be replayed on the Action Sports Cable Network after the Portland Trail Blazers broadcast. "They are an experienced team," Heard said of the Rams. "They have everybody back from the team that went undefeated into the state tournament last year. They are bigger than we are, and they shoot the ball well. This is probably our biggest test yet."
