Accused bank robber pleads guilty in Medford An accused bank robber pleaded guilty to federal charges Monday in Medford. Juan Maza Jr., 23, entered guilty pleas to charges of bank robbery and possession of a firearm in connection with a crime of violence. In exchange, prosecutors agreed to dismiss a second robbery charge. U.S. District Judge Ann Aiken accepted the deal and set sentencing for Nov. 4. Maza was arrested April 20 in connection with the Nov. 18 robbery of Jan's Tans and the Nov. 20 robbery of the Valley of the Rogue Bank branch at 2400 Poplar Drive. He was taken into custody at the Jackson County Corrections Work Center, where he was serving 120 days for probation violation on a prior conviction for possession of a controlled substance. According to Jackson County court records, his criminal history includes convictions for assault, harassment, careless driving and drunken driving -- twice. The arrest was based on a tip. The night before his arrest, police served a search warrant at Maza's home in northeast Medford. Pending sentencing, Maza remains in custody at the Jackson County Jail on a no-bail detainer.
