Are they legal in Medford? Do I have to get some sort of permit for it? — Timothy G., Medford They are "fine and dandy" to use in Medford, provided you’re cooking with them and not just watching the flames, says Medford Fire Marshall Dan Patterson. "As long as you’re using them to cook hot dogs or marshmallows, they’re fine," Patterson says. It’s a quirk in the city municipal code that allows outdoor fires for cooking. However, Patterson has seen the popularity of these outdoor fire pits, rings and boxes. He is seeking to amend the code to allow regular use without a cooked marshmallow.
