Central Point hosts MLK celebration Wednesday Jan 11, 2017 at 4:54 PM Jan 11, 2017 at 4:54 PM Central Point will hold its fourth annual celebration of Martin Luther King Day from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 12, at Crater Performing Arts Center, 655 N. Third St., Central Point. The event is free, but those attending are asked to bring a nonperishable food item to donate to Maslow Project, which helps homeless youths and their families. Students on a King celebration committee decided to focus this year's event on what is happening in the world today and how to move forward. Keynote speaker Flora Chavez, a Crater Renaissance Academy of Arts and Sciences alumnus, will discuss how growing up as a multi-ethnic person affected her choices, reality and dreams. Matthew Reynolds, a teacher at the academy, will be master of ceremonies. The event includes tributes to King through art, music and performance pieces by school district students and alumni, Davey Kashuba-Reum, Claudia Alick, Youth Empowerment Theater, Turning Point Dance, Dancing People Company and Jared Brown. A rebroadcast of King's "I Have a Dream" speech will cap off the evening.
