Local fighters nab 9 titles BEAVERTON -- Boxers from Southern Oregon captured nine championships Saturday during the first of the two-day West Portland Boxing Tournament at the Garden Home Recreation Center. The event brought together some of the best boxing teams from Oregon and Washington. Medford's Bulldog Boxing Club took the first-day team lead with seven championships, while the White City Cougars won two titles. In the only bout between boxers from the local clubs, Luis Avila of the Bulldogs defeated White City's Daniel Ibarra to avenge a loss at the Oregon Silver Gloves championships in the 11-12-year-old, 75-pound division. Other Bulldog winners were Lorenzo Arenas (12-year-old, 139 pounds), Austin Hernandez (12, 85), Ricky Gallegos (15-16, 132), Troy Wohosky (13, 106), Javier Torres (10-11, 100) and Boone Wyatt (13, 100). Six other Bulldog fighters will contest for championships today. The Cougars received championship efforts from Manuel Gonzalez (10, 75) and Chris Almaraz (17, 119). Homero Gonzalez of the Cougars lost a close decision to Marcus Jones Moore, No. 2-ranked nationally, in the 16-year-old, 147-pound class.
