His spirit and wit were intact to the end. He leaves behind family and friends who miss him dearly. The memory of his smile, intelligence, and sense of humor will be treasured forever. We love him more than words can express. Jerry was born in San Francisco, but spent much of his youth in Medford, Ore. After high school, he enjoyed the adventure of a lifetime backpacking and making mischief through Europe with his brother, Wayne and his best buddies. Later, he earned a track scholarship to the University of Oregon; obtained a degree in physical education; and married his college sweetheart, Jennifer. After college, Jerry returned to California where he worked for 30 years doing recreation therapy and coordinating volunteer services for the state hospital system. He loved being athletic and traveling to tropical locations. There was nothing he enjoyed more than sun, sand, and surf! Jerry also liked to sing, and he performed with the West Valley Light Opera in Saratoga, Calif. for several seasons. Jerry is survived by his wife of 23 years, Billie Jean Bertelsen; his brother, Wayne; his children, Shannon and Travis and their spouses Sam and Kat; his step-daughter, Debbie and her husband, Walter; his grandchildren, Joey, Alex, Calvin, Oscar, Mark, and Darren; and his great-grandson, Trevor James Donations in his name may be made to the American Cancer Society or The Special Olympics.
