Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend July 3, 2005 SinceWeAsked: A Pet Project It started with chickens and continued with an alligator loose in Medford. Confused? Read on. Well, the alligator was eventually caught, but now the Medford City Council is considering a ban on exotic pets, prompted by concerns that people just can’t keep control of their off-beat animals. The chickens, you say? This all began when city leaders took up a debate over whether the little cluck-clucks could be raised within city limits. We asked: Advertisement Should there be limits placed on what types of animals people can keep as pets within residential areas? After you’re done reading the answers, take some time to peruse our new question, which concerns legislative sessions. Yes. We are tired of hearing dogs bark at all hours day and night. And we are tired of smelling and cleaning up cat poop. — Les and Susan Sitzberger , Medford Yes. I would even say that there should be mandates on what species of canines can be owned in residential areas. — Sharilyn Ritacca, Medford Yes, because they will disrupt the neighborhood and could spread bad diseases, escape and jeopardize the town and possibly hurt someone. — Julia Sorensen (age 10), Medford Yes. I believe that there should be certain types of safe and non-disruptive animals within residential areas because, for instance, if someone brings a cobra to their house and it gets out of its cage then it could kill many people.— Jacob Sorensen (age 12, Medford In answer to your question of whether we should limit the kinds of pets within the city limits, my feeling is that as long as the owner is responsible what does it matter? That means they should not have noisy (waking one up early in the morning or making noise during the night) animals, they should clean up after them to avoid odors, disease or flies, they should confine them to avoid fights with other animals or hunting. — Barbara Keen, Ashland Lions ’n tigers ’n bears — oh my! There are some that care more about their desires then the needs of the animals. Let's stop going against nature ... we have already done enough of that. — Jodie Feighner, Eagle Point Absolutely! Some folks just don't care about what is best for the animal. They keep certain animals captive that should not be kept that way. These folks need to be to told which animals are allowed to be kept as pets and which are not. They are too selfish to figure it out for themselves. — J. That’s been a beef of many Oregonians over the last several biennium sessions: Why can’t lawmakers wrap up their business more efficiently?
