Grants Pass uses first-quarter surge to tiptoe past Ashland GRANTS PASS - Slow starts and strong finishes have been the trademark this season for a young Ashland girls basketball team. The Grizzlies (2-5, 0-2 SOC), with only one senior on the squad, had the former but not the latter Tuesday in a 57-40 Southern Oregon Conference loss to Grants Pass. Grants Pass surged to a 15-3 advantage after the first quarter and held off a brief Ashland rally in the third quarter to improve to 4-2 overall and 1-1 in SOC play. "We just came out really flat," said first-year Ashland coach Stephanie Santos. "It's like we come out with no fire. I guess we're still trying to figure ourselves out." The Grizzlies rode Marla Morin's 12 third-quarter points to trim a 27-13 halftime deficit to a 40-34 margin in the third quarter. Morin, who finished with 15 points, fouled out in the fourth period, and Grants Pass took advantage with a 17-9 run to finish the game. The Cavers used a combination of presses and the steady play of Alison Klingel and Megan Moon to fluster Ashland. "We kept mixing it up on them," said Grants Pass coach Ken Lathen. "We'd press full court and some half court. "Of course, it helps to have two experienced players (Klingel and Moon) at key positions." Klingel scored 10 points and dished out nine assists, while Moon - a second-team all-SOC player from last year - led the Cavers with 16 points. JV result - Grants Pass won. ROSEBURG 61, EAGLE POINT 40 - At Eagle Point, Roseburg broke on top early, fended off a second-quarter challenge and won handily. Lindsey Heard scored 20 points for the Indians, who had their 9-2 first-quarter lead whittled to 17-14 in the second. Ashley Curtis had 17 points and eight rebounds for Eagle Point (1-5, 0-2 SOC). Dani Rouhier had nine points and five steals and Jenna Bilden five assists.
