South falls to Summit in girls soccer Sep 03, 2016 12:00 AM A A South Medford coach Chris Hollewijn was looking for a challenge for his inexperienced team when scheduling four-time defending girls Class 5A state soccer champion Summit of Bend. And despite suffering a 3-1 home loss on Friday, the Panther coach was satisfied. “I don’t like losing,” said Hollewijn, whose team opened the season with a 3-2 loss at Hillsboro, “but there was a lot of positives. We showed a lot of improvement from our first game.” The Panthers (0-2) scored about five minutes into the match when Whitney Winans played a through ball into some space to Ula Chamberlin. The sophomore forward caught the ball on an up bounce and popped it into the net. Summit knotted the score 1-all at halftime then converted two second-half goals. South defenders Baylee Smith and Maddy Pineda had outstanding performances. “They’re a refined and disciplined team,” said Hollewijn. “You schedule a game like this to get pushed and our girls rose to the challenge.” BEND 6, GRANTS PASS 0: At Bend, Grants Pass trailed 4-0 at halftime during nonleague play. The Cavers are 1-1. MOUNTAIN VIEW 4, ASHLAND 1: At Bend, Mya Elder-Hammond had a last-minute goal for Ashland during nonleague action. Elder-Hammond scored from about 30 yards for the Grizzlies (0-1), who trailed 2-0 at halftime. Boys Soccer SUMMIT 7, SOUTH MEDFORD 1: At Bend, Summit, from the 5A Intermountain Conference, registered its third straight victory in handing South Medford its second consecutive loss. BEND 3, GRANTS PASS 0: At Grants Pass, Bend led 1-0 at halftime en route to the nonconference road win at Russ Werner Field. ASHLAND 6, MOUNTAIN VIEW 0: At Ashland, Ashland got six goals from six different players in a season-opening nonconference victory after the dedication of the newly refurbished Walter A. Phillips Field. Declan Hinkley assisted on the Grizzlies’ first goal of the game by Ian Rinefort on a set play, then Hinkley put a diving header into the net off a corner kick by Joe Holden to give Ashland a 3-0 halftime lead. Jahnoi Hall tallied Ashland’s second goal at the 26th minute. In the second half, the Grizzlies received goals from Jade Boucher, Joseph Wallner-Sentle and Ben Lucero. Volleyball MT. VIEW TOURNAMENT: At Bend, South Medford was the top seed in the Silver Bracket but lost to South Albany, 25-23, 25-21. Mac Criswell had 22 assists and nine digs; Chanel Groom seven kills, five digs and two aces; Megan Davis 12 digs, six kills and two blocks; and Jayda Willis 12 digs and two aces. In pool play, South swept The Dalles, 25-19, 25-21; split with Ridgeview, 23-25, 27-25; and split with South Albany, 25-14, 9-25. In a match Thursday, the Panthers (2-0) fell to Bend, 25-8, 25-16, 25-11. NORTH EUGENE 3, EAGLE POINT 0: At Eugene, North Eugene prevailed, 25-4, 25-18, 25-10, during Midwestern League play. Junior rightside Ryleigh Gainey paced Eagle Point (0-2, 0-1 MWL) with five kills and seven digs and Aliah Darling, a junior setter, passed out 10 assists.
