And one he had never lost to, although Wilson admitted that there had been "a lot of close ones." All history aside, Westview’s John Bolton pushed Wilson to the brink in an exciting 2½ -hour match on Thursday, with Wilson surviving for a 7- 5, 1-6, 6-3 victory at the Tualatin Hills Tennis Center. The resilient Wilson charged back from a 2-1 deficit in the third set by winning three straight games. Advertisement He moved on to the second round after Bolton’s primary weapon, his serve, failed him on match point when he hit his second attempt into the net for a double fault to close out the battle. "I knew he is always competitive no matter who he plays," Wilson said. "He’s dangerous. It’s tough to break him. I don’t feel I played my best, but sometimes you just have to get through." Which he did, although it took the day’s only three-set singles match for Wilson to get to the second round. He will face McKay sophomore Panharra Mam, a 6-3, 6-0 winner. With the first set tied at 5-5, Wilson reclaimed the lead, setting up game point by charging the net and then stretching for an overhand winner. Bolton then hit long to give Wilson a 6-5 advantage. The Black Tornado junior fell behind 4-0 in the second set before taking the fifth game. He then fought off four game points before Bolton blistered a serve that Wilson wasn’t able to handle as Bolton took a 5-1 lead. "He has a strong serve," Wilson said. "He threw me off a little bit. You just have to play your game against him." After Bolton blistered an ace to take a 2-1 lead in the final set, Wilson came alive and won the next three games. "(At 2-1) I needed that next game," Wilson said. "It’s a big difference between 2-2 and 3-1." Wilson was able to frustrate Bolton, who lost after hitting wide, into the net and long on game points, to build a 4-2 advantage. "Every point’s crucial, especially in the beginning of the third set," Wilson said. "You can send a message early that you’re not going away." "The whole time, I felt like if I stuck with it and held my serve, I had a good shot," Wilson added. After reaching the semifinals as the No. 6 seed at last year’s state tournament, the third-seeded Wilson said it didn’t bother him that he had to face a quality opponent in the first round. "There’s a lot of tough people," he said. "It’s just the way the draw worked out. You have to beat everybody to get through the tournament. Why not do it early? It’s a good wakeup call." Other area singles players weren’t not as fortunate in the first round. Ashland’s Jonathan Willing and Michael James and South Medford’s Ben Works each dropped their opening matches in straight sets and will now have to fight their way through the consolation bracket. Ashland’s No. 2-seeded duo of Ari Zaslow and Evan Schleining, and No. 6-seeded pair Kevin Spears and Tyler Coke, and North Medford’s Matteo Mengis and Clint Russell will begin play today in the doubles bracket. CLASS 4A GIRLS STATE TOURNAMENT — At Portland, Ashland freshman Kayla Moyse defeated her first-round opponent to advance to the second round of the singles portion of the Class 4A state tournament. Moyse breezed past Tualatin senior Shannon Murphy, 6-1, 6-4 to move on, while teammate Lauren Sargent fell to Rachel Berger of Hermiston, 6-0, 6-0. Moyse will face No. 2 seed Emily Kirchem, of Reynolds, and Sargent takes on Roseburg’s Stacy Wetmore in consolation play. Wetmore fell to Crook County’s Shyla Hargrave, 6-1, 6-1. Roseburg’s Becky Correll, the No. 4 seed, downed Lincoln’s Natalie Buller, 6-1, 6-2 and will play Corvallis senior Kasey Kuenzli in today’s round.
