Classroom Tribune FACT SHEET FOR DESIGNING THE AD   GOAL: The student will learn to design an original newspaper ad following specific directions. MATERIALS: Advertisers specification sheet Ad layout sheet Freehand Ad Contest: all entries must be of students own freehand drawing. No photocopy or computer-generated art work or type or stenciled copy will be accepted. Please use black ink or black, fine-point marker to complete the final ad. Computer-Generated Ad Contest: all entries must be produced entirely on the computer by the student, using the program of their choice. Entries must be submitted as black laser copies. Both Contests: Entries must fit within the space specified by the advertiser on the ad layout sheet. Limit: one ad entry per student. PROCEDURE: 1. Each class is assigned one or more advertisers. Once your class is registered, the Mail Tribune will send you the advertisers specification sheet and the layout sheet. (If your advertiser purchased a half-page horizontal ad, well send you a half-page layout sheet into which the ad must fit.) 2. Make enough copies of the advertisers specification sheet and the ad layout sheet so that each student has a copy. (Youll probably want to make extra copies of the ad layout sheet so that students can experiment with their ideas for a few days.) Encourage students to talk over their ad ideas with classmates and parents. 3. Discuss the information on the advertisers specification sheet with students to reinforce content items that should be included on the ad. ( More ads are disqualified because the logo hasnt been included than for any other reason. Be sure your students understand that they need to include the business logo. ) 4. Explain to students that the final version of the ads selected for publication will be photographed during the printing process, and that the drawing must be very clear. 5. Have students design the ad within the space on the ad layout sheet. They should work on practice sheets first. Be sure the final copies are in black ink or laser printed in black. Do not use any color but black.
