The grant, however, is contingent on the college raising enough money from other sources to cover the rest of the remodeling project, said Margaret Bradford, the college’s director of marketing and community relations. College officials estimate that preparing the 102,000-square-foot former Tyco building for student use will cost roughly $8.2 million. RCC bought the building and 17 acres in White City in late 2003 for $3 million. The college is seeking voter approval of a $24 million bond levy in November. About $11.2 million of that would be used at the Table Rock campus to pay off debt and remodel the building to house programs in construction, electronics, manufacturing, diesel technology and public safety. The remaining money would help buy and develop buildings at its downtown Riverside Avenue campus and retire debt. "The bond levy would be the best, most effective way to raise the money" and secure the Meyer grant, Bradford said. "We hope that the public will recognize the same value in the project that the trust did." Advertisement The college raised an initial $5.5 million through the sale of bond-like instruments called certificates of participation to buy and start remodeling the building. Those investors will be repaid with student fees and money previously budgeted for building leases. The U.S. Economic Development Administration awarded RCC a $1 million grant for the remodeling project in May. The Meyer grant brings the amount raised for the Table Rock campus to $7.25 million. Even if the bond measure fails, college officials would continue working to find funding to finish the project, Bradford said. If the bond measure passes, grant funds would give the school a head start on future phases of remodeling, she said. The college wants to have the Table Rock campus ready for students by fall 2005.
