But it turned the tables Friday, playing near error-free ball and capitalizing on turnovers by Henley for a resounding, 42-6 triumph to open Skyline Conference play. Tim Stickler and Greg Richardson returned interceptions for touchdowns in the first quarter to get the Knights rolling. "That set the tone big time," said North Valley coach Todd Willaman. "It was just huge." From there, the offense took over, grinding out yards on the ground and punching the ball into the end zone when it had opportunities. Advertisement "In the first two games, we’d gain 350 yards, then shoot ourselves in the foot," said Willaman. "Any time we were in the red zone, we were just killing ourselves. We put it in when we needed to, and that made a big difference." Richardson ran for 102 yards on 13 carries and capped the Knights’ scoring with a 36-yard TD run. North Valley accounted for 240 rushing yards on 43 carries. Meanwhile, the defense limited the usually dangerous Bryn Card to 49 yards passing and the Hornets (1-1, 0-1 Skyline) to 123 total yards. Stickler, a junior linebacker, darted in and picked off a Card pass in the flat less than two minutes into the contest and returned it 35 yards. Richardson, a senior, did likewise from his cornerback spot, taking it 30 yards with 2½ minutes left in the period. "They got really good breaks on the ball," said Willaman. "They were not poorly thrown balls, just good coverage." The Knights were picked to win the Skyline, and the coaches impressed upon the players the importance of putting the nonleague losses behind them and getting off to a good Skyline start. "Coach (Jeff) Richard talked about that to the players," said Willaman. "He told them winners have to make plays, and they really took that challenge to heart and got it done tonight." North Valley’s Josh Makepeace completed 7 of 15 passes for 68 yards, and found Anthony Spain and Kyle Buth for TDs of 7 and 6 yards, respectively. Spain had four catches for 34 yards. The Knights’ other score was an 8-yard run by Duane Ogden. Dollarhide’s final tally, a 4-yard run, came with 8:23 remaining to make it 21-14. He ran 30 times for 136 yards and also scored on an 18-yard run in the second quarter. That score was set up by a 42-yard interception return by senior free safety Joe Jiron. It looked as though Hidden Valley (2-1 overall) would trail 14-7 at intermission after Mazama’s Jared Caufield ran in from the 1 with 19.5 seconds showing. But Dollarhide returned the ensuing kickoff 82 yards to knot it at 14-all. The Mustangs limited the Vikings to 47 second-half yards, and Mazama’s leading rusher, Garrett Poetsch, was ejected for throwing a punch. He had 50 yards. Sophomore Kevin Miner rushed for 239 yards and two touchdowns for Illinois Valley and scored twice on two-point conversions. Steven Paul shared the offensive load with 22 carries for 103 yards and a score. Junior middle linebacker Lefi Tausaga had 12 tackles for the Cougars. But the Cougars responded with touchdowns in the third and fourth quarters and held the Cavemen (1-2) scoreless. Dan Lever led all players with 151 yards rushing on 14 attempts and caught two passes for 14 yards. Wiersma led Grants Pass 82 yards on the ground. MARY’S 7 — At Chiloquin, St. Mary’s entered its Southern Cascade League opener undefeated, but Chiloquin (2-1, 1-0 SCL) stymied the Crusaders’ offense. St. Mary’s (2-1 overall) was limited to two first downs and 45 yards rushing. The Crusaders’ only pass completion came on a 44-yard fourth-quarter touchdown from quarterback Austin Anderson to Kris Slavinski after trailing 27-0. Chiloquin junior running back Louie Wahl led the Panthers with three touchdowns. Wahl rushed 24 times for 107 yards. Chiloquin took the opening kickoff and marched 65 yards for a touchdown. Wahl completed the drive with a 3-yard run. The Panthers went up 14-0 in the first quarter when Josh Johnson recovered a fumbled punt in the end and Alex Palscencia ran in the conversion. Chiloquin finished with 201 yards on the ground and 46 through the air. Domiciliary. Garrett Childress rushed nine times for 105 yards for the Honkers (2-1, 1-0 SCL) and Craig Mills was 8-for-12 passing for 83 yards, including a 52-yard bomb to A.J. Clemens for a touchdown. T.J. Orton scored both Cascade Christian (0-3, 0-1 SCL) touchdowns and had 157 all-purpose yards, including a 65-yard punt return at the end of the third quarter. Ty Boice was 11-for-25 for 91 yards through the air. The Butte Falls season got off to a delayed start because it appeared the Loggers would not field a team. But the decision was reversed after the start of school when enough players signed up to play. Josh Sabin scored five touchdowns for Camas Valley, which rolled up 552 net yards.
