Southern Oregon's largest healthcare provider intends to build a multi-million dollar, four-story Neuroscience Institute across Barnett Road from Asante Rogue Regional Medical Center. The project will allow Asante to consolidate about 50 neuroscience and allied staff presently dispersed throughout the hospital's campus. "We will be able to bring together neurologists, neurosurgeons, rehab physical therapists and imaging," Asante spokesperson Lauren Van Sickle said. The 34,642-square-foot building on the southwest corner of Barnett Road and State Street will sit on 1.54 acres just west of Hematology Oncology Associates. The project goes before the Medford Site Plan and Architectural Commission at noon June 5. Asante conferred with city staff three weeks ago and will ask for six code exceptions, including two that are typical of such projects, said Praline McCormack, a city planner. One involves fewer parking spaces, the second involves the orientation of the building, McCormack said. "When you build within 450 feet of a major transit (bus) stop, you have to orient the entrance on that street," she said. "There is a transit stop across the street, but the building is oriented to face the parking lot to the east (along State Street). All they have to do is demonstrate a need for the exception." The other four exceptions to the code require applications, she said. Three of them involve parking lot and sidewalk planter issues. The fourth is a waiver for a bike lane. "The justification for that is the Larson Creek bike path (just to the south) serves that purpose," McCormack said. Van Sickle declined to discuss costs or specifics of the project. She said more information would be available in about 10 days. The design calls for a rain screen cladding, a sort of faux-exterior designed to keep moisture away from the building; a glass curtain wall, allowing natural light; a store-front feel with large windows on the ground floor; and a terrace with plants on the fourth story. "There are also water features in a public plaza outside the entrance," McCormack said. The construction project, led by general contractor Adroit Construction, will seek a LEED — Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design — silver certification. "It will be very energy-efficient with lots of natural light," McCormack said. "It will be similar to the outpatient center that was recently constructed."
