Then, he received a text message from head coach David Inglis. Six days later, the former St. Mary’s standout from Medford nearly pulled off a major achievement, ultimately falling one stroke shy of advancing to the NCAA national championships. Wu shot a 1-under-par 69 in the final round of the New Haven Regional Saturday to give him a fifth-place, 3-under 207 (68-70-69) at The Course at Yale. He needed to be the top individual not on a team advancing to nationals. Of 14 teams at New Haven, the top five moved on. Wu contended with 45 players on the other nine teams and four other at-large individuals for one spot. "Ugh, the agony of missing it by one stroke," Inglis tweeted. "Played great again today." Wu was the first alternate for one of 45 individual slots across six regionals following the NCAA selection show and gained entry when St. John's Dylan Crowley withdrew to play in a local U.S. Open qualifier at Bethpage State Park instead of the NCAA tournament. Wu made the most of his opportunity and was in position for the region's individual berth all three days. His final round left him one shot behind Addison Coll of Ohio State and Tolver Dozier of Troy. One of the last to tee off, Wu started on the 10th hole and birdied two of his first seven holes. He made birdie at the 225-yard par-3 13th before carding a birdie for the third time in the tournament at the 553-yard par-5 16th. A bogey 5 at No. 17 dropped him to 1 under for his round, and that’s where he stayed, finishing with 10 pars. Coll and Dozier were two hours ahead of Wu and had to wait to see if the latter would make a birdie coming in to join them in a playoff. When it didn’t happen, Dozier earned the finals berth by holing out his second shot from 138 yards for eagle on the first playoff hole.
