Too much Morin dooms North Ashland got Marla Morin on a roll in the second half and there was nothing North Medford could do to stop her. Morin burned the Black Tornado for a game-high 32 points and the Grizzlies rallied in the fourth quarter for a 70-60 win in Southern Oregon Conference girls basketball Wednesday at the North Medford gym. Morin, a 6-foot-0 junior center, scored 21 points in the second half, including 10 in the final period, when the Grizzlies erased a 48-47 deficit. "She (Morin) just used us inside," North Medford coach J.T. Thomas said. "Morin just decided there was no one we had that could stop her." Ashland (5-7, 1-2 SOC) was also boosted by the play of Alysse Carlson in the fourth quarter, when the freshman point guard scored 11 of her 14 points. North Medford (4-9, 1-2 SOC) executed its game plan more effectively in the first half and led 35-32 at the break. "Our press in the first half worked well at times," said Thomas. "We were able to make points off the turnovers and our perimeter game was nice." The Black Tornado connected on seven 3-pointers, including three by reserve Chelsea Rettmann. Sophomore wing Brittany Hodges scored 17 points to lead four North players in double figures. Sophomore point guard Anna Lilly did a good job running the offense to go with 13 points. The Black Tornado only committed 11 turnovers. "Anna Lilly took care of the ball real well," said Thomas. "She got us to where we needed to be and she got her shot going." North went cold near the end of the third quarter - scoring just one point off its final eight possessions of the period. "We just didn't come out with the same fire in the second half," said Thomas. ROSEBURG 55, SOUTH MEDFORD 50 - At Roseburg, South Medford couldn't overcome Roseburg's size advantage and free-throw shooting and suffered its first Southern Oregon Conference loss. Lindsey Heard scored 22 points and Shannon Burmeister had 16 for the Indians (3-0 SOC), who were 16 of 28 at the line to South's 7 of 10. Whitney Grant paced the Panthers (6-6, 2-1 SOC) with 21 points, and Kirsten Gillingham added 10 points and hauled in 12 rebounds. CRATER 75, EAGLE POINT 39 - At Central Point, Crater continued its domination of the SOC by running to a 19-5 first-quarter edge and thumping Eagle Point. The Comets (12-1, 3-0 SOC) have won their three conference games by an average margin of 35.3 points. Crater senior point guard Sarah Pool had 18 points and eight assists, and senior forward Amy Denson contributed 13 points and nine rebounds. The Eagles (3-10, 0-3 SOC) were limited to five field goals in the first half, when they committed 20 of their 32 turnovers. Sophomore post Ashley Curtis led Eagle Point with 13 points. The Cavers (8-4, 2-1 SOC) were led by Megan Moon with 19 points and senior point guard Alison Klingel added 11 points and eight assists. Sophomore forward Shanna Claflin came off the bench to grab a team-high eight rebounds for Grants Pass. The Pelicans fell to 0-3 in the SOC and 3-9 overall.
