Byers spurs North Valley win MERLIN -- North Valley's Warren Byers came alive in the third quarter and the Knights rallied for a 58-50 Skyline Conference boys basketball victory Friday over Rogue River. The win moves the Knights into a conference fourth-place tie with Rogue River. Both teams are 5-4 in league play. Byers, a 6-foot-8 senior post, didn't score in the first half but tallied nine points of his 11 points in the third quarter as North Valley erased a 28-24 halftime deficit to go ahead 44-37. "He (Byers) got more active," North Valley coach Dave Forbuss said. "He got some stuff off the boards to get some points on follow-up rebounds." Byers added 11 rebounds and contributed some key passes. "He had at least five or six assists," said Forbuss. Junior wing Sam Jarrett led the Knights with 17 points. Jarrett spearheaded an intense defensive effort in the second half. "He (Jarrett) made some big steals," said Forbuss. "Our guards made some adjustments on both ends. We were standing around the perimeter instead of penetrating." Ron Wessels recorded a game-high 18 points for Rogue River. Henley sophomore wing Michael Nunes came up with seven steals to go with 16 points. Phoenix (3-17, 1-9 Skyline) career 3-point leader Gabe Willard sank four treys to add to his school record. Horning, who was 14-of-16 from the floor, scored 10 points in the fourth quarter as the Mustangs (10-9, 6-3 Skyline) rallied from a 47-45 deficit entering the period. ILLINOIS VALLEY 56, MAZAMA 52 -- At Klamath Falls, Ry Heller's field goal gave Illinois Valley a two-point lead with 23 seconds to go and the Cougars prevailed hitting a pair of free-throws down the stretch. Illinois Valley connected on only 14 of their 28 free-throw attempts for the game but made their final six down the stretch. The loss drops Mazama (5-3 Skyline) into third place in the conference. JV score -- Mazama 42, Illinois Valley 34. Girls ROGUE RIVER 40, NORTH VALLEY 38 -- At Rogue River, Michelle Anderson was having a difficult time for Rogue River until it came to crunch time. Then the junior guard provided the spark to keep Rogue River atop the Skyline standings with Henley at 6-1. Neither team has faced each other yet this season. "We were playing catch-up most of the game," Rogue River coach Dan Mortinson said. "We hung tough and changed the momentum." Ashley Enoch was a big reason Rogue River trailed early. Enoch helped the Knights get out to a fast start by scoring nine of her 14 points in the first half. Enoch was held to two second-half points until sinking a desparation 3-pointer at the buzzer. Rogue River was clinging to a 33-31 lead in the fourth quarter when Anderson hit successive field goals to give the Chiefs a six-point bulge with three minutes remaining. Anderson also added three free throws in the final period "They weren't playing her very hard because she hadn't shot well," Mortinson explained. "But she came through in the clutch." HENLEY 47, PHOENIX 40 -- At Phoenix, surprising Phoenix led Henley 21-20 at halftime, but the Pirates opened the second half with five straight turnovers that contributed to a hard fought loss. Phoenix (7-12, 2-7 Skyline) received a capable effort from freshman guard Maria Gonzalez, who came off the bench to score seven points and effectively handled the Hornets' press. Jennifer Bones led the Pirates with 11 points, while Jessica Prisbrey added nine rebounds and eight points.
