Eagle Point continues its dominance NEWBERG Eagle Point capped an impressive three-day run Friday when it won the eight-team Newberg dual-meet wrestling tournament. With wins over host Newberg, ranked fourth in the state, in the finals and over No. 2 Crook County in the semifinals, the No. 5 Eagles recorded three victories over top 10 teams in three days. They defeated No. 9 Crater in a Southern Oregon Conference match on Wednesday. "Youd have to say thats a pretty good week," said Eagle Point coach Brad McBee. "Theyre three of the premier programs in the state of Oregon." Eagle Point defeated Newberg, 30-25, only after heavyweight Blake Cam recorded a 7-0 decision. Cam also finalized the 28-22 semifinal win over Crook County with a pin. The Eagles opened with a 56-3 victory over Reynolds of Portland. To reach the finals, Newberg beat Mountain View of Washington and West Linn. "This lets our kids know that they really are a tough team, that theyre for real," said McBee. "But whats great about this competition is that were not just walking through it. People are nipping at our heels. Theyre going to improve so we have to improve." In addition to Cam, who was 3-0 and anchored the two big wins, McBee singled out James Mannenbach and Chet McBee, who also were 3-0. He also noted that others wrestled well in defeat, avoiding pins or one-sided decisions. "Thats the thing about dual meets," he said. "Its a total team effort."
