The Ashland High senior defenseman literally skated circles around Klamath Union, scoring three goals and assisting on another in sparking the Grizzlies to a 4-0 victory over the Pelicans in the Rogue Valley Hockey League championship game. "He’s the only guy in this league whose slap shot I’m afraid of," said Ashland goalie David Jacobson-Fried of Schoonover. "I get to see it in practice every day. He puts bruises on my legs, and that’s with four inches of pads on." Tiffany Schoonover — Cody’s sophomore sister — tallied Ashland’s first goal on an assist from Cody and Emily McLaughlin at the 6:52 mark of the first period. After that, it was all Cody Schoonover, starting with a missile-like slap shot from 40 feet out with 11 seconds left in the first period that gave the Grizzlies a 2-0 lead. Advertisement "I didn’t have anyone to pass to at that moment so I just rifled it at the net," said Schoonover of his long-distance goal that dazzled a crowd of perhaps 400 spectators. Six minutes into the second period, the 5-foot-11, 175-pound defenseman was at it again. He took possession of the puck about 25 feet from the goal and wheeled around a pair of Pelicans for the score. "I threw a couple of head and shoulder fakes at them — that seems to throw everyone off," Schoonover said. Schoonover’s final goal, which came with 7:16 remaining in the third and final period, started with a face-off. He cleverly pushed puck threw the legs of a Pelican and suddenly found himself on a breakaway. Klamath Union goalie Ben Hobbs didn’t have a chance. "This was a nice way to cap off my high school career," said Schoonover, who began playing hockey when he was 10. "I left it all on the ice tonight." Almost lost in Schoonover’s offensive fireworks was the superb goalie work of Jacobson-Fried. The hard-nosed senior stopped a wave of early Klamath Union attacks, including a hard slap shot by Colton Hines from the left wing seven minutes into the match. A couple minutes later, Trevelynn Sears missed a golden opportunity on a power play as her shot hit the right post. Jacobson-Fried was consistent throughout, registering 29 saves and the shutout, his first of the season. "I’d have to say this was my best game," Jacobson-Fried said with a grin. "This is my first year playing hockey, and in the beginning it was tough. "The most important thing is positioning — staying in the crease." Ashland finished with a 29-24 edge in shots. CRATER 8, NORTH MEDFORD 5 — Jake Keyser scored four goals and Devin Swanson, Mike Drew, Johannes Ellendorf and Robert Hayward tallied one each to power Crater to victory in the third-place match. Hayward added two assists. Antti Pesso and Brandon Thomas connected twice each for North Medford. Andrew DeKorte had the Black Tornado’s other goal.
