Pirates stay on track, dispatch Vikes PHOENIX - Phoenix, mindful that it must take care of business as the Skyline Conference volleyball season winds down, did so Tuesday in a match against Mazama. The Pirates, in third place in the Skyline with a 7-4 record and 18-7 overall, produced a businesslike, 15-3 win in the first game, then held together in Game 2, winning 15-10. "We had a very efficient first game," said Phoenix coach Tom Murphy. "We served the ball well and took their serves and had good transition and good offensive attacks." The second game wasn't as sharp. "We lost a little focus and weren't very efficient," said Murphy. "We had a few more unforced errors than we like to have. We were helping Mazama's cause at that point." Kacie Kantor, a senior middle back, and junior defensive specialist Jennifer Dunlap led the Pirates' outstanding serving. Kantor was 11-for-11 with two aces and Dunlap 13-for-14 with two aces. "They had a hard time turning our serves into any kind of offense," said Murphy. Senior outside hitter April Darby and junior middle Tiffany Ross played well along the net. Darby had six kills and Ross six kills and two blocks. Junior setter Kelsey Russell was, as usual, in control for the Pirates, contributing 19 assists. ROGUE RIVER 11-15-15, ILLINOIS VALLEY 15-9-10 - At Rogue River, Kristi Frederick scored 14 of Rogue River's 15 points in the third game during a Skyline Conference match. Frederick also contributed nine digs, while Katie Glasscock led the Chieftains in kills with 13. Madi Biggs had seven digs for Rogue River (7-6, 6-5 Skyline), which won despite 20 hitting errors. HENLEY 15-15, HIDDEN VALLEY 5-2 - At Murphy, top-ranked Henley kept Hidden Valley on the defensive throughout the match as the Mustangs remained winless in the Skyline Conference. Hidden Valley senior defensive specialist Krista Hudson had a good night on serve-receive, producing a team-high eight digs. Junior middle Nicolette Churchwell got moved up from the Mustang junior varsity and contributed three blocks and three kills in her first extended varsity action. Laura Miller provided seven assists for Hidden Valley (1-12, 0-11 Skyline). LAKEVIEW 15-15, NORTH VALLEY 4-8 - At Lakeview, the Honkers welcomed back junior outside hitter Jess Childress with a Skyline Conference victory. Lakeview (27-3 overall, 10-1 Skyline) got eight kills from Childress, who had been sidelined three weeks by a wrist injury, and 12 kills from senior middle hitter Frances Hartman. The Knights (5-6 Skyline) stormed to a 7-0 lead in Game 2 but couldn't put the Honkers away. Southern Cascade League CASCADE CHRISTIAN 15-15, CHILOQUIN 5-2 - At Chiloquin, senior co-captain Krystle Holtz had a strong all-around performance for top-ranked Cascade Christian (20-1, 8-0 SCL). Holtz was 11-for-11 serving, including points 7-14 in the opening game, and added three kills, four digs and four aces in the match. Serving was a key for the Challengers, who defeated the Queens in three games during an earlier contest. Cascade was 50-for-51 from the service line. Kristin Salamone led the Challengers' attack with four kills and chipped in three blocks, while senior right-side Amy Roseberg provided four blocks. In the second game, Janee Johnson served points 11-15 to close out the match. Defensive specialists Johnson and Sheena McNeill combined for 10 digs. ST. MARY'S 15-15, GILCHRIST 2-7 - At Gilchrist, Melissa Anderson had 13 assists and Chrissy Seus pounded out seven kills as seventh-ranked St. Mary's cruised to a win. The Crusaders built a 13-1 lead in Game 2 before holding on for the victory. Brittany Lawson led a strong serving attack with a 10-for-10 performance and an ace. Teammate Kristina Easton had six digs. St. Mary's (13-6, 7-1 SCL) caps the regular season next week with home games against top-ranked Cascade Christian and Lost River. Skyline A League BUTTE FALLS 15-15, PROSPECT 11-4 - At Butte Falls, Krystle Rowley served out the final points in each game as Butte Falls remained unbeaten in Skyline A League Southern Division play. After Prospect closed to within 12-11 in the first game, Rowley served the final three points for the win. In Game 2, Jessica Dunlap served points 7 to 11, then Rowley finished it out again as Butte Falls raised its record to 8-0 in league and 12-6 overall. For the Loggers, Sarah Matthews had six kills, Asia Million 11 digs and Rowley four aces.
