If you follow Bear Creek "uphill," you run into Emigrant Creek. You can follow Emigrant Creek up into the mountains just north of Pilot Rock. On the south side of Pilot Rock, water flows down into the Klamath drainage. If you look at a map, you can see Bear Creek has no single source — water in the creek comes from a 395-square-mile watershed that stretches roughly from Mount Ashland and Pilot Rock on the south; to Soda Mountain and the Green Springs summit in the east; to Grizzly Peak and Roxy Ann Peak in the north; and Johns Peak, Anderson Butte and Wagner Butte in the west. All the rain and snow in that area ultimately makes its way to Bear Creek in more than 20 named tributary streams and countless unnamed rivulets that feed the tributaries. These days Bear Creek’s flow also is augmented with water from Howard and Hyatt Prairie lakes (which lie in the Klamath River watershed).
