Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Mar. 30, 2015 at 12:01 AM Posted Mar. 30, 2015 at 12:01 AM » Social News March 30, 1915 Medford Elks will enjoy their first stag social and smoker at the Elks' Temple Wednesday evening at 8 o'clock. A short program has been arranged, and a lunch will be served during the evening. The entertainment is under the management of the house committee consisting of S.I. Brown, C.E. Gates and T.E. Daniels. A number of novel stunts will be features of the evening, and preparation is being made for a large attendance. The entertainment is for Elks only, and visiting members are especially requested to be present. Ashland Items: E.F. Smith, liveryman, recently returned from a trip to Klamath County, and reports lively operations among foreign horse buyers in the vicinity of Merrill. The French government especially is securing a majority of the animals. Prices range from $90 to $150. The loss in transit is considerable, not only on the ocean, but also between here in New York. The buyers admit that the average life of each horse, when once engaged in active war operations on the field, is only four days. On April 1, there will be a round-up at Merrill, where thousands of horses will be ready for inspection and purchase. SALEM, Ore., March 30 — An ordinance forbidding women from frequenting places where intoxicants are sold cannot be pronounced unconstitutional on the ground that it interferes with individual liberties of women citizens, according to a decision by the Supreme Court today in the case of E.F. Laughlin vs. Tillamook City. The opinion was a reversal of a decision by Circuit Judge Galloway. Laughlin was engaged in the saloon business in Tillamook, and was convicted in police court of violating an ordinance by permitting a woman to visit his place. He appealed to the Circuit Court, and won on the ground that the ordinance was unconstitutional.
