Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend January 5, 2006 Medford market punished for selling alcohol to minor A West Medford convenience market faces a fine and restrictions on its ability to sell alcohol because an employee sold alcohol to an underage customer during a "compliance check" by the Oregon Liquor Control Commission in October 2004. The Thrifty Nifty Market, at 223 W. Jackson St., owned by James A. Rose, must pay a $4,950 civil penalty and serve a two-day suspension of its liquor license, starting Friday. The punishment resulted when an employee sold alcohol without checking the identification of a teen volunteer working with OLCC officials Oct. 23, 2004. He also was cited for selling alcohol to a minor in December 2003. After a hearing that Rose requested on the latest violation, the OLCC imposed the fine and short suspension, but also offered Rose the option of a 32-day suspension. The Thrifty Nifty passed its last OLCC check. In the latest round of compliance checks Dec. 29, six of 18 Medford businesses tested sold alcohol to a minor working with law enforcement officers. The underage volunteers use their own legal identification when they attempt to buy alcohol. Businesses that sold to underage customers included: Bi-Mor, 4999 Crater Lake Highway; Harry & David, 1314 Center Drive; Rose Grocery, 201 W. Jackson St.; Shari’s, 71 Stewart Ave.; The Break Room Billiard Cafe, 707 Medford Center; and Witham’s Truck Stop Restaurant, 2339 Biddle Road. Businesses that refused to sell to minors included: Courtyard by Marriott at the Medford Airport; Medford Grocery Outlet, 35 E. Stewart Ave.; Minute Market, 401 S. Oakdale Ave.; Mountain Mike’s Pizza, 2640 E. Barnett Road; Purple Parrot, 828 S. Central Ave.; Quick Stop Market, 3320 N. Pacific Highway; Rooster’s, 350 E. Barnett Road; Southgate Shell, 428 E. Barnett Road; Thrifty Nifty Market, 223 W. Jackson St.; Time Out Sports, 1213 Stewart Ave.; Trophy Club Bar & Grill, 812 S. Central Ave.; and Zach’s Deli, 1310 Center Drive.
