Top women bowlers in Grants Pass tournament The best women bowlers in the world will compete in the Rogue Valley next week, and amateurs have an opportunity to bowl with them in a pro-am on Sunday. The Professional Women's Bowling Association added a tour stop this year in Grants Pass at Showtime Family Lanes, where it will compete Monday through Thursday. The tour is televised on a delayed basis twice a week on ESPN2 and features such stars as Carolyn Dorin-Ballard, who has won the last two events; Aleta Sill, the first woman to top $1 million in earnings; Tish Johnson, second on the all-time earnings list; Michelle Feldman, who has the highest average (216.43) on tour; Wendy Macpherson, voted bowler of the decade for the 1990s; and Kim Adler, who won the only other tournament this year that Ballard didn't. There are plenty of spaces open for the pro-am tournament, a nine-pin, no-tap format, in which a first ball that knocks down at least nine pins is considered a strike. Amateurs will bowl three games with three different pros, combining their handicap scores with the scratch scores of the pros. Squad times Sunday are 11 a.m. and 1, 3, 5 and 7 p.m. Interested bowlers can call ahead or just show up. There are men's and women's divisions for adults, seniors and juniors. Entry fees are $45 for adults, $35 for seniors and $20 for juniors. Festivities actually begin Saturday morning, with a 10 a.m. exhibition billed as the Battle of the Sexes. Professional Bowlers Association Hall of Famer Marshall Holman of Medford, now a color commentator for the PBA on ESPN, and PBA star Dave Husted will compete against two women stars, who have yet to be determined. Holman ranks seventh and Husted eighth on the all-time PBA earnings list, and between them they have 36 titles, 22 by Holman. The women will be two of five members of the Ebonite pro staff _ Dorin-Ballard, Sill, Leanne Barrette, Cara Honeychurch and Laura Lee Daniel. A media challenge, featuring local personalities, is scheduled 2-4 p.m. Saturday. Showtime Family Lanes is located near Interstate-5 Exit 58. The address is 2318 N.W.
