Bennion’s career night propels Crusaders Saturday Jan 27, 2018 at 12:01 AM Emma Bennion poured in 19 of her career-high 27 points in the fourth quarter to power St. Mary’s past host Cascade Christian, 54-45, in a Southern Cascade League matchup Friday. “She just took over the game in the fourth quarter; kind of put us on her shoulders and carried us through,” said Crusaders coach Richard Vasey. “Her game is driving to the basket, and she just drove and got fouled. She had a couple of three-point plays in there.” Bennion went 9-for-11 from the free-throw line in the fourth and the Crusaders (5-14, 2-3 SCL) also received a season-high 14 points from Ibixica Alvarez, who turned in her best game since returning from an ankle injury. “She’s getting some confidence back,” Vasey said of Alvarez, who had recently been out for six weeks. “It was probably the most complete game she’s had all season.” The Challengers’ slow start gave them a hill to climb but Sophie Ferreira, who finished with 18 points, provided baskets when Cascade Christian (10-12, 3-2) needed them to stay afloat with star post Emily Stephens out. Sydney Johnson finished with 15 points for the Spartans, who won their eighth straight game and improved to 14-2 on the season and 6-0 in the MWL. Emma McKenney added 11 and recorded three of her team’s six 3-pointers. Freshman Jayd Sollinger led Ashland (3-13, 0-6) with eight points. Churchill’s Isis Smith made five 3-pointers and led all scorers with 20 points. The junior guard scored 14 of the Lancers’ 18 points in the second quarter, including four of her 3-pointers, to help Churchill (7-8, 4-2 MWL) go out to a 32-21 halftime lead. Lopez added seven rebounds, three assists and two steals for Phoenix (3-15, 0-5 Skyline), while Delani Parent had seven points and nine boards. For Klamath Union (8-9, 2-3), Mercedes Charkins scored 14 points and Kayleigh Haupt 10. Annalee Brieholz played tough defense for the youthful Cougars (3-14, 1-6 MVL), who had won two of their last three coming into the contest and played without their only upperclassman. The Lions (13-4, 4-4) have won four of their last five.
