Photo by Bob Pennell Goose puts claim into osprey nest By MARK FREEMAN SHADY COVE - In a ponderosa pine snag 100 feet above the Rogue River, an osprey and a Canada goose are locked in a landlord-tenant dispute that has both raptor and waterfowl honked off. An osprey family that returned to its summer home recently found the female goose had claimed squatter's rights in the roomy nest along the river just north of Shady Cove. (more . . .) Line dancing is one of the classes the city plans to offer at the Sgt. Hubert Santo U.S. Army Reserve Center at McAndrews Road and Columbus Avenue. State higher ed budget would freeze tuition, raise faculty pay By PETER WONG SALEM - A legislative subcommittee began hearings Tuesday on a higher education budget that would freeze undergraduate tuition for two years and include some extra money for selected faculty pay increases. The $2.2 billion budget that Gov. John Kitzhaber has proposed also provides enough in direct state support for the university system to maintain instruction and other services without the budget cuts of the past six years. Girl, 16, charged as adult in father's beating By JIM DAVIS A 16-year-old Talent girl will be charged as an adult for allegedly persuading two other teenagers to break into her home and attack her father. Terra Michalson was indicted Tuesday by a Jackson County grand jury on two counts of second-degree assault and one count of first-degree burglary.
