How do you get that stuff off the bottom of shoes? — Rebecca S., Medford Don’t like being called a gumshoe, eh, Rebecca? There are ways to remove it. The easiest is to stick the shoe in the freezer (we recommend putting it in a plastic bag first — unless you like ice cream that tastes like foot). Depending on the sole, it can be scraped off easily after that. Another remedy is to place the shoe in a shallow flat pan with rubbing alcohol in the bottom. Then use something like a baby wipe (as opposed to a paper towel that will fall apart), also soaked in alcohol, to scrub it down. Advertisement They say kerosene works, too. Hope some of these help, and maybe some gum-spitters will read this and say, "Golly, I had no idea people stepped in that — I’ll stop spitting it out!" We can hope, anyway.
