PREP VOLLEYBALL Challengers down St. Mary's for SCL title Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Oct. 21, 2015 at 2:00 AM Posted Oct. 21, 2015 at 2:00 AM » Social News Cascade Christian came out strong and rolled to a 25-10, 25-9, 25-12 victory over visiting St. Mary’s to clinch the Southern Cascade League regular-season volleyball championship Tuesday. “We tried to establish our back offense and a steady serve,” said Cascade Christian coach Rob Kleker, whose sixth-ranked team also secured a spot in the Class 3A state playoffs. “I think we did both those things.” Senior middle blocker Ellie Brown had an effective match for the Challengers with 14 kills on 16 swings to go with four blocks. “(Brown) totally dominated the net offensively for us,” said Kleker. “Our back row did a great job where our setter could get the ball in a good situation. The passing led to our attack.” Alyssa Brown, Cascade Christian’s senior setter, dished out 26 assists and served three aces and Claire Hawkins added 10 kills. For the match, the Challengers (18-2, 8-0 SCL) had 36 kills and 13 aces. Madi Christensen paced St. Mary’s with five kills and two blocks and Katie Rietmann had five blocks. The Crusaders (12-11, 6-2) received strong defensive play from Mackenzie Addington, and Sarah Thisted went 6-for-7 serving with two aces. “St. Mary’s did a decent job of getting touches on the ball,” said Kleker, “but we didn’t miss many serves and kept the pressure on them. We played consistent and didn’t have any dips in momentum.” The Challengers will host the SCL tournament on Saturday. Cascade Christian plays Illinois Valley at noon followed by St. Mary’s versus Lakeview at 2 p.m. The two winners play for a 3A playoff spot at 4 p.m. SOUTH MEDFORD 3, WILLAMETTE 0: South Medford passed at a 99-percent clip on serve receive and registered its second consecutive Southwest Conference victory, 25-22, 25-19, 25-23. Kelsey Bartlett had a strong all-around game for the Panthers (2-15, 2-11 SWC). The senior setter provided 15 assists, 15 digs, three kills and one ace. The Panthers received 20 digs, five kills and two aces from sophomore outside Alyssa Vaughn and Chanel Groom, a sophomore middle hitter, blasted a team-best 10 kills to go with two blocks. Brea Barton (13 digs, five kills) and defensive specialist Maddy Myers (13 digs, five aces) also made important contributions for South. ROSEBURG 3, NORTH MEDFORD 0: North Medford played good defense in a Southwest Conference home loss to Roseburg, 25-19, 25-20, 25-4. Emily Carter paced the Black Tornado (11-13, 6-7 SWC) with 10 kills and six digs. North received 10 assists, six digs, three kills and two aces from Alex Barry. Cassie Campbell had two kills for North, while Ryan Frings came up with eight digs. SHELDON 3, GRANTS PASS 0: At Eugene, Sheldon won its sixth straight, 25-10, 25-15, 25-13, in Southwest Conference play. Elliott Cook had eight kills and four blocks for Grants Pass (4-14, 1-12), combining with Haley Dougherty for an improved effort on serve receive. Darian Lopez and Halleigh Noga each had three kills. Dougherty finished with 12 digs, and McKenna Musser had 12 assists. EAGLE POINT 3, CRATER 2: At Eagle Point, Eagle Point held on for a 25-22, 25-22, 21-25, 18-25, 15-13 win during Midwestern League play. Kylene Briggs had 28 digs and 12 kills and Megan Ayres 20 assists, 15 digs, four kills, four blocks and four aces for the Eagles (5-14, 2-9 MWL). Kirsten Pariani had eight digs and seven kills and Ryleigh Gainey 13 digs, six kills and three blocks for Eagle Point, which used key blocks from Briggs and Rose McFarland to seal the upset. For Crater (11-8, 6-5), Rane Jensen had 14 digs and four aces while serving 27 times, Amanda Gardner added 13 digs and Heather Colmer was strong in serve-receive. HENLEY 3, PHOENIX 0: At Klamath Falls, Henley won, 25-7, 25-10, 25-11, to finish in a tie for first place in the Skyline Conference. Phoenix (3-16, 0-10 Sky) had a couple runs in the later sets but couldn't pull out a win. The Hornets are 12-6 overall and finished 8-2 with Hidden Valley and North Valley in league play. LAKEVIEW 3, ROGUE RIVER 0: At Rogue River, Rogue River ended the season on a losing note, 25-23, 25-10, 25-21. Courtney Sakraida led the Chieftains with four kills, nine digs and nine assists, while Elly Moulder and Morgan McKown each added four kills and two blocks. Bella Dodson had a team-high 18 digs for Rogue River (1-15, 1-7 SCL). PROSPECT 3, NORTH LAKE 1: At Prospect, Baley VanWormer and Hailey Govenor each had 10 kills to spark Prospect to a 25-21, 25-17, 25-22 victory over North Lake in a Mountain Valley League district tournament play-in game. Prospect (14-8) advances to the five-team tournament Saturday at Trinity Lutheran in Bend. VanWormer, a junior outside, also pounded five aces. Sophomore setter Jordan Kuykendall passed out 23 assists for the Cougars, and teammate Marissa Raines, a senior libero, contributed 27 digs.
