By Thomas Moriarty Mail Tribune Posted Dec. 13, 2014 @ 4:53 pm » Social News For the second year in a row, the gym at St. Mary's School in Medford Saturday was filled not with polyester-clad athletes moving the ball down court but the whirring of tiny gears as dozens of adolescent engineers pitted one tiny robot against another. A joint venture between the science education nonprofit FIRST and the iconic maker of building blocks, FIRST Lego League organizes robotics challenge competitions for youth age 9 to 14. Tournament director Jamie Kaufman said the regional qualifying tournament has been held in the Medford area for the past four years, with 2013 being its first year at St. Mary's. "Everybody gets the same kit of missions (for their robot to complete)," she said. "The goal is to get as many points on the table as your robot can get." Those "missions" can range from moving particular objects on the table to navigating a complex series of obstacles, requiring competitors to carefully program the computer "brick" that guides the robot. The mission set is determined by a yearly challenge issued by the FLL, which provides guidance on the design of the table the robots must navigate. All Lego parts are allowed, but competitors are required to use only the company's NXT or EV3 robotics controllers. Kaufman pointed to increasing education requirements in science, technology, engineering and math — known collectively as STEM — as one of the major benefits of participation in the program. "This is STEM at its finest," she said. "This allows kids to put all those concepts together into something tangible." Unlike traditional athletics, team coaches still provide guidance and mentoring, but are totally hands-off when it comes to actually building the robots. Mike Neuman, who coaches the Klamath Coyotes — sponsored by Eagle Ridge High School in Klamath Falls — said one of the most rewarding parts of coaching is watching the kids develop teamwork skills. "What's really amazing is going to a tournament, after we've been running around like crazy all year, and see them work as a team," he said, watching team members test the programming of their robot. "We've kind of been watching these kids grow up." Out of the 18 teams competing Saturday, Kaufman said, four or five will advance on to the state tournament in Hillsboro in January, and then, with any luck, onto the national or world competitions.
