In fact, the 6-foot-8 St. Mary’s sophomore came out ahead in the matchup of premier post players as the second-ranked Crusaders defeated two-time defending state champion and top-ranked Regis 49-47 Saturday. Fiddler scored 11 points to go with 12 rebounds and six blocks. More importantly, he scored nine points on 4-of-5 shooting in the second half and held Muscardin, a 6-4 senior, scoreless when the game was on the line in the final period. "Garrett had a monster game tonight," St. Mary’s first-year coach Rick Jackson said. "He was smart in the post and he forced Muscardin into hurrying his shot. Holding Muscardin scoreless in the fourth quarter won us the game." Junior point guard Austin Grant helped the Crusaders (6-1) get off to a successful start. Grant scored 11 of his game-high 18 points before intermission. He also had six assists in the contest. Advertisement St. Mary’s built a 23-11 lead, but the Rams closed the half on an 11-3 run to trail by four at intermission. "Austin was very aggressive offensively in the first half and that got us out to a good lead," said Jackson. The Crusaders held a 40-33 margin entering the final quarter, but Regis went on a 7-0 burst to tie it. "We knew they were going to make a run," said Jackson, "and we had to weather that storm. We really did a good job overcoming adversity." Grant made 3 of 4 free throws down the stretch, including the front end of a one-and-one, to give St. Mary’s a 49-47 lead with seven seconds to go. Regis missed a desperation 3-pointer just before the buzzer. "We’ve won two very difficult games on the road with this one and Oakland last week," said Jackson. "Now we know we can beat good teams on the road, and that should give us some confidence to do the same thing going into our league season." ST. MARY’S (49) — A.
