The Indians, two games up on the Black Tornado entering the doubleheader, needed to win one game to clinch the crown. With Blake Keitzman on the mound in the opener, the odds were in the favor of Roseburg (21-5, 19-2 SOC). North, 20-6 overall, dropped to 15-6 in the SOC and into a tie for second place with South Medford. The Black Tornado advances to state as the No. 2 representative based on head-to-head results. Roseburg and North each host state playoff games May 23. Advertisement Keitzman allowed four hits, struck out 11 and walked four. "He’s had a tremendous season for us," said coach Troy Thompson, "not only on the mound but at the plate. Today was a good example of that. He had a great game." The leadoff hitter, Keitzman was 2-for-3 and scored three runs in the first contest. Despite sewing up the title, the Indians didn’t let up. "Our kids understood the situation and what we needed to do," said Thompson. "After that first game, sure, there was a sense of accomplishment, I guess. But we also understood it was just the first game of a doubleheader, and we certainly wanted to come out and get the second one, too. "But, yes, it was nice to get that first one." In Game 1, Roseburg scored three runs each in the third, fifth and sixth innings. The Tornado helped out in the third, making three errors. For the Indians, Brett Stephens had two hits and scored twice, Dusty Brigham had two RBIs and Brandt Walker doubled home two runs in the fifth. North’s run came on an Abe Eubank homer in the sixth. In the nightcap, Roseburg got the jump again, scoring four runs in the first two innings and putting up eight in the fourth on six hits, three walks and an error. "It was nice to come out and score some runs for our pitchers," said Thompson. Eric Thompson went the distance, allowing four hits for Roseburg. Brigham was 3-for-3 and Mickey Schmorde 2-for-3 for the Indians, and each had two RBIs and two runs.
