The scores were 30-28, 25-7, 25-19. The Pirates (6-1, 1-0 Skyline) battled the Vikings to a 14-all tie in the first game and didn’t find relief until a Rebecca Garcia ace sealed the win. Phoenix established a big lead in Games 2 and 3 to close out the match. "I think that first game was a combination of us missing eight serves and Mazama playing very well," said Pirates coach Tom Murphy. "We are traditionally a very good serving team, but tonight we missed more serves in one game than I can remember." Mazama made a last-ditch effort to take Game 3, fighting back from a 21-12 deficit to 21-18, but couldn’t overcome the early Phoenix advantage. Junior middle hitter Kelsey Nelson had nine kills and was 9-for-16 on attacks, while senior outside hitters Jessica Howard and Ashley McCarty contributed eight and six kills, respectively. Advertisement Setters Shonda George and Aurora Fry did a good job of running the Phoenix attack, according to Murphy. ROGUE RIVER 25-23-22-25-15, ILLINOIS VALLEY 19-25-25-23-9 — At Cave Junction, senior outside Michelle Woodall had her best match in a big comeback for Rogue River. Woodall pounded 10 kills, came up with seven digs and served 13 points. Junior setter Courtney Ritchie also had 13 points from the service line and Michelle Krein added 12 points. Rogue River (1-1, 1-0 Skyline) capitalized on the front-row play of hitters Kayla Tocher (13 kills) and Kate Whipple (10 kills). HENLEY 25-25-25, NORTH VALLEY 19-18-14 — At Merlin, North Valley held an 18-12 lead in the first set, but Henley went on a 12-point run to set the tone for the match. The Knights were led by Trista Morton, who had a game-high nine digs to go along with four assists and two aces. HIDDEN VALLEY 21-25-25-25, SOUTH UMPQUA 25-14-20-19 — At Murphy, senior outside hitter Danae Cornelison had six kills and 10 digs to lead Hidden Valley in the nonconference opener. Mustang Jennifer Schubert had an effective match at the net with four kills and three blocks. Shannyn Brown had a team-high 12 assists and only one miss in 28 serves, while Dana Rumrey added nine digs and three kills to the Mustangs’ attack. ST. MARY’S 23-25-25-25, BUTTE FALLS 25-18-23-16 — At Butte Falls, St. Mary’s shook off an opening loss in the nonleague match. In Game 1, Butte Falls took advantage of seven Crusaders’ missed serves, but St. Mary’s racked up 25 aces in the final three games. Alexa Burwell and Tia Khachitphet each had nine aces for the Crusaders. Kelsey Reedy had 12 kills and 16 digs, and freshman replacement setter Cynthia Naumes dealt out 17 assists. For Butte Falls, Melody Carlisle had 15 assists and Shawna Wright smacked seven kills and had four digs. PROSPECT 20-25-25-25, MILO ACADEMY 25-15-11-17 — At Prospect, Prospect improved to 2-0 in nonleague play. Senior captain Candice Bennett had seven kills, five digs and two blocks to lead the Cougars, and Lacy Musard added five kills. Prospect had 13 service aces, including five by Alicia Pace four each by Nicole Newcomb and Candi Louis. Newcomb also had four digs.
