Silva, Walker claim victories at the Southern Oregon Speedway WHITE CITY - A former track champion grabbed the glory at the Southern Oregon Speedway on Saturday night. Dennis Silva, part of the Ron Martin Wholesale team, won the main event in the modifieds. Silva, one of five one-time class champions in the race, outgunned Markey James for the win. Dan Estremado, another former modified champion, was third. Jim Walker Jr. continued his dominance in the pro stocks. After an entertaining battle with Butch Poppa over the first half of the feature, the defending track champion ran off with his second victory of the young season. Perennial contender Frank Word III was slowed early in the race and was unable to climb back to challenge Walker Jr. The feature was slowed when Mike Medel rolled over. The driver was not injured. Kevin Cory broke up Dan Menne's early season cruise through the sprint cars. Cory took the checkered flag in the main event, leading wire-to-wire in snapping Menne's two-race streak to open the season. Menne finished fourth. Glenn Hester of Hillsboro won a crash-marred feature event in the dwarf cars. The event finished under a caution and included a nasty crash involving veteran driver Tom King, who flipped several times midway through the race. King was not seriously injured. Tom Lanigan won the mini stock feature. All told, 122 cars took part in the action on the third night of the 2002 season. Racing continues on Saturday, with gates opening at 4 p.m. and racing at 6.
