Holly Theatre hosts its first public event in 28 years Holly Theatre will the the site of one of the art installations and music performances during the Downtown Art + Sound Festival happening Friday and Saturday, Sept. 19-20. Though it is not yet restored, the theater will open its doors for the first time in 28 years. One of 12 venues for the new two-day music and fine-art festival created by Metro Medford Downtown Association and sponsored by the Medford Arts Commission, the festival will showcase 80 music groups and 12 artists at location around downtown. The Holly will host three art installations and four acoustic music groups. On Friday, violinist Dennis Lufkin will perform from 5 to 6:30 p.m. and The Ancient Wild will perform from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the theater's lobby, located at the corner of Sixth and Holly streets. On Saturday, Martin Ball will perform from 5 to 7 p.m. and Third Seven will perform from 7 to 8:30 p.m. "Bodies As Instruments," photography by April and Bob Metternich, will be displayed, along with pend and ink drawings by Whitney Rolf. "Light Falls," a light installation by Gregg Stephens also will be displayed in the Holly's unrestored auditorium. The large light sculpture will be accompanied by the acoustic musicians. The Holly Theatre is one of the VIP venues of the festival and will be open to VIP ticket and two-day pass holders. See www.downtownartandsound.com for ticket information. Once restored, this 1930 movie palace will present live concerts, film and other special events, and become an important component of an emerging downtown arts and dining district to help drive the continued economic investment and job creation in the region. The Holly Theatre’s restoration began in 2012 with completion of the building’s facade. The recreation and installation of the original marquee and blade sign won Medford's 2013 Historic Preservation Award. Opened in 1930 and closed in 1986, the Holly Theatre was purchased by the nonprofit JPR Foundation in 2010 and is now owned and managed by the Foundation’s wholly-owned subsidiary, Jefferson Live with the mission to foster the arts, provide cultural enrichment and enhance economic opportunities in Southern Oregon and Northern California through the operation and programming of cultural facilities. In addition to the Holly Theatre, the organization also restored and operates the 1935 Cascade Theatre in Redding, Calif.. Free tours of the theater are offered every 30 minutes from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. the first Saturday of each month. These hour-long tours offer visitors an in-depth view of the theater’s unique history, the restoration process, and the theater’s future as the region’s largest indoor performance venue. No reservations are required. The next tour is set for Saturday, Oct. 4. Information is available at www.hollytheatre.org.
