Junior forward Andy Hagert scored 17 points and played a solid all-around game to lead the Panthers to a 63-52 season-opening win over South Eugene on Friday night in the South Medford gym. South Medford graduated nine players from last season’s squad that finished 24-3. Hagert, one of the few returners, made 7-of-10 shots from the field. "He accepted his role last season by swinging from the JV team to the varsity, and he did a great job on JVs," South Medford coach Dennis Murphy said. "This year we told Andy we needed him to step up and be a scorer. "And he’s doing it." Senior posts Boomer Marshall and Eric Fischer added 12 and nine points, respectively, for the Panthers. However, it was South Medford’s smothering man-to-man defense that fueled the victory as much as anything. South Eugene made just 21 of 56 shots from the field, and sank only one field goal in the first 7½ minutes of the second quarter when South Medford built a 14-point lead. "They made two tough 3’s at the end of the game or else we hold them to 46 points," Murphy said. "We struggled with our outside shooting (4-of-17 from the 3-point line), but the kids got after it on defense." The kids got after it on defense." Sharp-shooting senior guard Jeremy Frantz got off to a slow start but nailed a pair of 3-point baskets in the third period. Junior point guard Ryan Fiegi scored only four points but turned in a solid floor game. South Medford has little time to savor its victory. The Panthers play host to North Eugene at 1:45 p.m. today.
