Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend December 1, 2005 Snow causes some traffic snarls By CHRIS CONRAD Mail Tribune A lot of snow and bluster on Rogue Valley roads yielded no major accidents Wednesday night. The main problem facing drivers trying to cross the Siskiyou Summit on Interstate 5 was snarls caused by drivers who stopped in the road and couldn’t get going again, Oregon State Police trooper Stephanie Bigman said. ODOT crews began plowing the freeway at the summit at around 5 p.m. Wednesday in an attempt to stay ahead of the storm, ODOT spokesman John Vial said. However, stalled cars blocking the roadways made it difficult for ODOT snow plows to keep the freeway clear, Bigman said. Elsewhere in the valley, Jackson County sheriff’s deputies were kept busy dealing with wrecks on Highway 238 at Jacksonville Hill, Jackson County Sheriff Mike Winters said. Advertisement Forecasters are predicting more snow on the Siskiyou Summit tonight, although it will not match Wednesday night’s accumulation. Expect between three and six inches to fall on the summit, with lows in the 20s, forecasters said. Cascade passes to the east could see between eight and 14 inches of snow tonight. Snow levels in the Siskiyou Mountains could reach 4,500 feet early today and increase to 5,500 feet by the afternoon. Until then, windy conditions above 3,000 feet could create blizzard conditions, forecasters said. ODOT issued a conditional closure of the Siskiyou Summit Wednesday evening, which meant that only cars equipped with tire chains were permitted to travel through the area, OSP Lt. Gregg Hastings said. Hastings had not received any reports of major accidents in Jackson County as of late Wednesday. "We haven’t seen anything yet, so we’ll keep our fingers crossed," he said. Winters said that he called in several deputies to help OSP deal with the increase in weather-related accidents. "We’ll throw in whatever resources it takes to fill in the gaps," Winters said. Snow showers at the summit will be likely until Friday. The wintry storm system won’t begin moving out of the valley until sometime Saturday night, forecasters said.
