Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend May 21, 2005 Fuego to open season tonight By ERIK HIDLE for the Mail Tribune ASHLAND — The Southern Oregon Fuego will take its first step toward semipro status at 7 tonight at Walter A. Phillips Field in Ashland. It will play Rogue Valley rival Las Pumas, the 2004 Las Liga Del Valle champions. Fuego will be a provisional team in the Men’s Premier Soccer League this season. The addition of head coach Kevin Primerano, formerly of the Major League Soccer Metrostars, is a welcome addition in a league which is sanctioned by the United States Soccer Foundation and FIFA. Advertisement The team-run league is composed of players holding amateur status. Allowing ages 17 and up, the MPSL has players from high school, college, former professionals and anyone else able to compete at the semipro level. The purpose of the league is to act as a showcase of talent for colleges and professional teams. The provisional status enables Fuego to compete in the league but without championship possibilities. The three provisional teams will not be placed in the regular season standings. A win is still a win, but it will not have an impact on the MPSL. However, it will impact the region. Fuego’s players primarily come from Southern Oregon. "We want to be able to be a part of Ashland, a part of Southern Oregon," said Iman Siadat, Fuego team captain, "We volunteer in the community, we work closely with the youth of the area through ScienceWorks and with soccer camps. That makes the games more important because we have a connection with the fans." Several familiar players will be on the field tonight. "A lot of their players used to be with Fuego," Siadat said. "By facing them, we think it is a good way to start out the season." Home games this year will feature the noted MPSL squad Chico Rooks and neighboring Salinas Valley Samba. Also at home, Fuego will have a rematch against the Cascade Surge. Last year’s meeting with the Surge, which ended in a 2-2 tie, prompted Fuego to form a board of directors and push toward semipro status.
