Crater falls in tournament final PLEASANTON, Calif. Crater performed well in a hostile environment, but the Comet girls basketball team still suffered its first loss of the season. Crater lost 73-70 to host Amador Valley in the championship game of the Amador Valley Classic. The Comets led most of the way but lost two key players to fouls late and couldnt contain University of Santa Barbara-bound guard Mia Fisher. "It was a crazy atmosphere with some wild officiating," said Crater coach David Heard, whose team fell to 4-1 on the season. "We made some poor decisions and there must have been about 600 people rooting against us, but it was a good experience. Itll help us get ready for league." The Comets led by as many as 14 points during the third quarter and held a 56-49 lead entering the final stanza. But Amador Valley slowly crept back into the game. Janell Sapienza, who helped boost Crater to its early lead with 14 first-half points, fouled out with 3 minutes remaining and the Comets clinging to a four-point lead. "That hurt us a lot," said Heard. "We have a young bench and they (bench players) did some good things, but there are still some growing pains there." Amador Valley (7-0), the 10th-ranked team in California, fought back to take its first lead since the first quarter on two free throws with 25 seconds left. The foul shots came when Amy Denson, who tallied 14 points for Crater, also went to the bench with five fouls. The Comets Sarah Pool had her running jumper in the lane blocked by Fisher with 10 seconds left to seal the win. Fisher, a 5-foot-9 senior guard, lived up to her billing as one of the top 20 prep players in the nation with 38 points on 11-for-22 shooting from the field and 15-for-19 from the line. "Shes something else," said Heard. "I knew she would get her 30 points, but I dont think we did a very good job of making her go left. That was one of our plans on defending her." Jodi McLeod finished with a team-high 21 points for the Comets while Sapienza added 15. Crater, which held a 42-24 advantage on the boards, was led by McLeods 13 rebounds while Denson pulled down nine. Pool, Denson and McLeod also made the all-tournament team.
